Pozole Verde

I feel as if Mexico has more main courses that are like a stew than the United States. Some of my favorite dishes in Mexico consists of a mix of a hearty broth, vegetables, and a really tender meat. Some names that come to mind are carne en su jugo, birria, and pozole.

Today we went to the 24th anniversery of Ruta El Castillo Del Pozole. When we arrived we were suprised to see the location packed with a festive atmosphere. We were not prepared for the live music, or the complementary tequila and cake. However, we were expecting to eat an amazing bowl of pozole.

Pozole is one of the pre-hispanic dishes that truly defines Mexican cuisine. It is a stew that consists of a broth that normally will be either, red, green, or white, hominy, and some type of meat as its base. It will typically be served with a side of vegetables, and salsas that can be added to provide more flavor to the dish.

Rute El Castillo Del Pozole specializes in pozole verde (green pozole) with pork, a pozole that comes from Chilapa de Alvarez, Guerrero. Which happens to be my favorite pozole. We both ordered their specialty and really left with a good impression. The broth is perhaps the best that I have ever tried in Guadalajara. The flavor of the pozole stands out on its own without the need to add any condiments. However, adding lime kicks the pozole into overdrive. In addition to the pozole itself, We each received two tacos dorados con papas (fried potato tacos), and chicharron ( fried pork skin). It is traditional to serve pozole verde with snacks on the side. The tacos were epic!

Overall, one of my favorite places to eat in Guadalajara. Maybe not the best place if pozole is not your thing as the menu is limited. However, the pozole is first class.
